Match Report

It was a baptism of fire for Jarrow Youth on their first league game of the new season against Sunderland St Mary's away.

Jarrow never quite got going during this game against a very good passing team. It took until the 15th minute for St Mary's to score with a diagonal through ball that cut the defence for the striker to latch onto, leaving Luke Gibson in goal no chance.

Youth show a glimpse of fight and had 2 corners in a row in the 18th minute which were well dealt with by St Mary's. However, on 24 minutes, after great battling by Jack Larner, he supplied the ball to Joe Vassallo who hit a fantastic looping shot, over the keeper to make the score 1 - 1.

Gibson then made a double save but was unable to stop the third shot on 32 minutes as St Mary's once again took the lead. Another goal for the home team shortly followed with a well-timed through ball and a good finish leaving the keeper no chance. 3 - 1 half time.

The second half started and so did the torrential rain. St Mary's started the way they had finished and quickly extended their lead with a well struck shot from the top of the box.

The flood gates opened, despite some great saves from Luke Gibson St Mary's were 6 - 1 up within 9 minutes.

Youth managed to settle the ship a little and started to play some neat passing. It is what they practice in training but failed to apply in this match.

The game could quite easily have reached double figures but this week’s MOTM Luke Gibson made some marvellous saves.

Highlight of the game was captain Jack Beckett, going on a run from defence, beating 4 players and eventually being fouled.

St Marys ran out the game winning 8 - 1. Some lessons to be learned here today.
